Ever wonder why orange lip colors look yucky on you? Or why wearing browns, or peaches make you look washed out? That is because you are a cool skin tone.

If you like pinks instead of peaches, burgundy and wine colors instead of firehouse reds, and white instead of beige it’s a good chance you are either a summer or winter skin tone coloring.

Winter skin tone colors are cool, clear and vibrant. Summer skin tones are cool and muted or more pastel.

Usually people with platinum blonde, ash blonde, mousy brown, dark brown, blue-black, salt and pepper or silver-gray color hair, fall into the winter or summer color range.

Winters look absolutely fabulous in rose, burgundy, blue reds, royal purple, fuchsia, shocking pinks, true green, lemon yellow, turquoise, silver, some navy, gray and black as well as plum. (Think Elizabeth Taylor’s favorite purple hue or the color of a plum).

To figure out if two or more colors go together, break out a color wheel (shown below).

1. First things first, beautiful makeup starts with beautiful skin. Cleanse, tone, and moisturize skin according to your skin type. Be sure to groom your brows.

2. You can apply foundation and powder, but if you’re pressed for time, apply concealer or stick foundation only where you need it and gently blend with a foundation brush, makeup wedge, or even your fingers.

3. For the eyes grab a royal purple pencil liner (like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Ransom) and line the eyes on both the top and bottom waterline. Extend the liner on a tiny bit passed the outer corners of the eyes. Gently smudge the liner with either a makeup wedge, a smudging brush (like MAC #214), or a Q-tip for a subtle smoky effect. Add a touch of black pencil in the inner rim of the bottom waterline. Apply 2-3 coats of mascara (try Rimmel Glam’Eyes Lash Flirt Mascara).

4. For a very pretty look like Nia’s, we’re going to layer the blush. First apply a deep rose blush like NARS Blush in Taos to the apples of the cheeks. Then on the top of the cheekbones, apply a shimmery peachy pink blush like NARS Blush in Orgasm. Using an angled blush brush (like MAC #168) makes applying blush a cinch.

Did you goof on the blush? No worries—just blot it down with your loose powder. Or do this anyway for a “light from within” look.

5. Apply nude gloss. For the perfect nude for your skin tone . Finish with a few spritzes of makeup setting spray (like Urban Decay De Slick Makeup Setting Spray). And you’re done!

Using Colored Mascara
“I’ve used colored mascara on Rihanna before – a modern way to wear this is to color match the mascara to your eyeshadow. Go for a dark blue, green or purple and pair with a similar eyeshadow shade. It’s a great look for a night out.”

Getting The Most Out Of Your Complexion
“For black skin you can’t beat Iman’s foundations for texture and color. To avoid your complexion looking  too flat use a foundation a shade lighter than your skintone to add highlights to your cheekbones, nose and brow bones.  One shade will just blank you out” says Karin. “Apply foundation with your fingers and remember the key word is blend!” she adds.

“Also, don’t over-powder your complexion. Moisture in the skin is a sign of youth. Simply blot excess oil with a tissue and dust lightly with powder.”
